History

On 29 September 1999, at a special meeting held during the 8th International Conference on Applied Algology, the International Society for Applied Phycology (ISAP) was founded. An Executive Committee elected two officers: Prof. Johan U. Grobbelaar (Bloemfontein, South Africa) as President and Prof. Mario R. Tredici (Florence, Italy) as President-elect. Prof. Roberto de Philippis (Florence, Italy) agreed to serve the Society as Treasurer/Secretary. In Montecatini Terme, it was decided to give to the new Society an interim name, International Society for Applied Phycology (ISAP), and it was decided to ask the members to vote on the the name. In addition, the President proposed to use the logo of the 8th International Conference on Applied Algology for the Society, and asked the members to vote on this decision.

The proposed names were:

  • International Society for Applied Algology (ICAA)
  • International Society for Applied Phycology (ISAP)
  • International Society for Algal Biotechnology (ISAB)
  • International Society for Applied Phycology and Biotechnology (ISAPB).

Although only one third of the members voted, the name International Society for Applied Phycology was the name choosen by a majority:ISAP got 15 votes; ISAPB 7 votes; ISAB 5 votes and ISAA 2 votes.All the members that sent their vote to the Treasurer/Secretary, except one, approved the logo proposed.

What are the ISAP objectives?

The ISAP is a non-profit organization that aims to promote research and the dissemination of knowledge concerning the utilization of algae. In order to meet these objectives, the ISAP promotes the following activities:

  • Organizes triennial meetings, encouraging wide participation from academia and industry.
  • Forms an informed source of expertise among members who could provide an accurate, disinterested opinion. concerning algal products or relating to environmental impact.
  • Forms links and affiliations with existing national and regional organizations of applied phycology.
  • Promotes the exchange of students and researchers.
  • Applies for special grants and donations from international bodies, governments and industry to support activities of the Society.

  • Issues an electronic newsletter to publicize activities.

  • Organizes workshops and training programs.

  • Supports culture collections of algae.

  • Organizes exhibitions of commercial algal products and similar pertinent exhibits along the triennial meetings.
